We Were PiratesPhoto by misses.boggs

We Were Pirates, Mike Boggs’ one-man, DC band, crafts pitch-perfect power pop in his bedroom with an instrument or three and a laptop. The same musical sensibilities he layered into his winning This American Life‘s “Three of Us” contest submission echo on his recently released EP, The Wolf. Both “The Wolf” and “Nervous” are sparkling songs with clever, playful lyrics. In “The Wolf,” the singer dithers like a rabbit as he is quarried by a lupine heartbreaker. Reversing roles, We Were Pirates’ “Nervous” confession is a smooth seduction to initiate a relationship. It’s too bad he appears to be wearing a wedding ring in the above photo.

We look forward to hearing more from this boy genius and hope We Were Pirates will play in New York City. We’d love to see him live.

You can buy his music on iTunes and CD Baby.

  1. I like this guy! Sounds a lot like Death Cab. Thanks for introducing me to him!

  2. The intro on “The Wolf” sounds so much like “Radiation Vibe” by Fountains of Wayne to us that it was distracting at first. But now that we’ve compared both songs to each other they don’t sound that much like each other.

We didn’t think about Death Cab, but we can hear that too.
