The Pipettes echo the classic girl-group sound of the 60s but with a modern feminist twist. Instead of effete torch songs about unrequited love, The Pipettes sing smart, sometimes stinging, songs soaked in female empowerment. The Pipettes wouldn’t cry because Johnny left their party with Judy, they’d find another guy and dance. They are more likely to sing “Stop in the name of love before I break your heart” than vice versa.
Regardless of their riot grrrl attitude, The Pipettes and their near-invisible male backing band, The Cassette, have created a fun and catchy album.
