You know when you get an album but don’t really listen to it. Then one day, maybe a year or two later, it randomly resurfaces and you fall in love. Well, that happened to us recently.
We downloaded Nina Simone’s The Amazing well over a year ago. Our eMusic subscription was about to refresh and we were hurriedly trying to use the credits before they were lost. So we downloaded a lot of music that afternoon that we didn’t listen to immediately.
Then yesterday “Forbidden Fruit” came blasting out our speakers. The song makes us laugh. Nina, one of our personal heroes, really delivers on this song. The song has a jazzy intro before is moves into a simple melody. Nina sings in a childish voices as she retells the story of Adam and Eve. Then song bursts into this sexy, seductive, raucous chorus. Man, it’s a great song.
The song after “Forbidden Fruit” is “Gin House Blues.” We were familiar with this song from Nina’s album The Blues. It was never a favorite. But this version has a sad soulfulness that deeply appeals to us and stands in sharp contrast to the rowdy, handclappin’ version on The Blues.
