Buffy the Vampire Slayer is some of the best television ever created if you ask me. I reluctantly agreed to watch the first few episodes after some intense coaxing from a friend. I was hooked almost immediately. Since then I’ve watched the entire series more times than I’m willing to admit in print.
I love Joss Whedon’s sense of humor and style. His musical Buffy episode is great — he wrote all the music and lyrics himself. It might not be Sondheim, but it’s pretty awesome.
Yesterday, Joss and friends released the first episode of their musical mini-series, Dr. Horrible Sing-Along Blog, on the web yesterday. I haven’t seen all of it yet, but I am very excited!
Here’s the quick, offical synopsis:
The story of a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he’s too shy to talk to.
Hailing from Newcastle upon Tyne, Lanterns on the Lake (née Greenspace) formed in 2007. Frankly, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of information about the band out there. I can’t find any information about an impending album or any tour dates outside of the UK. But the band’s sparse, yet generous, myspace page contains several songs for download.
Hazel Wilde’s dreamy vocals have the vulnerable and yearning qualities of an insomniac. “This Year” is built around a simple guitar figure that soars and descends as Wilde sings about the hope and pragmatism of changing one’s life. “Caught on the Way” deals with similar themes.
I love the songs the band has released. I hope they will release an album and play in NYC.
“This Year”

The mixtape is a beautiful thing. Almost everyone has either received or given a lovingly crafted collection of music. Often they are given to friends or lovers. Some are sappy or romantic, others are rowdy and rambunctious. Originally, they were passed around as cassettes, then CDs, and now digital files.
Muxtape.com has brought the mixtape to the Internet age. Now anyone can upload a list of songs to share with others over the Internet. It’s pretty cool and it’s nice when you find a good list.
La Blogotheque produces this great weekly video podcast called The Take-Away Shows. Basically, each week they film a band performing outside. The backlog of The Take-Away Shows is very impressive. They’ve filmed a lot of great bands. And the movies are enthralling.
